So, a door a day, or to put it another way - everyday a door! In short I intend to post a picture of a door everyday throughout the year. Without getting too techy techy, I'm going to shoot them all on my fabulous little Canon Powershot G15 (portable and rather beautiful) and all presented in square format, which is slightly counter-intuitive as doors are rarely square - but the visual continuity is rather appealing to me and frankly the discipline will do me good!
"Why doors?" I hear you mumble semi-curiously. Well of course on one level they represent an astonishing diversity in terms of design, material, quality, detail, character, charm, often tied in architecturally (but just as often not) with the building or room they provide entry to or exit from. On a more human level they say a great deal about us as individuals; walk down any suburban street and you'll witness a veritable cornucopia of door-chitecture as the great public try to say something profound or indeed otherwise about who they are and how they'd like to be perceived, simply by the choice of door on their abode.
On a slightly more Freudian/abstract level (Pretentious? Moi?) we're constantly using the image of the door as metaphor, whether it's 'opening the door to your subconscious,' or 'when one door closes another one opens' sort of thing. I'd also like to throw into the mix 'the eyes are the windows to your soul' even though I know that a window is not in any sense a door, but since some doors have windows in them, or are even made entirely of glass, I'm going to run with it.
Whichever way you cut it, I just love doors - the aesthetics, the textures, the shapes, all the paraphernalia such as the hinges, bolts and locks. I'm simply indulging a slightly anoraky life-long obsession and hoping that you can tap into your inner geek and join me on my year-long doorathon!!
